Haunted Chocolatier, the next game from Stardew Valley creator Eric “ConcernedApe” Barone, has kept fans waiting for a while — but the developer’s latest update suggests the wait is moving in the right direction.
Barone told followers that the game’s development is now progressing at “full speed,” a notable shift after a period in which his attention was split. He had been busy finishing the big Stardew Valley 1.6 update, which left Haunted Chocolatier on the back burner for a stretch.
The reason for that pause is worth remembering. Haunted Chocolatier was never the project Barone originally planned to build right away. He has admitted he set aside another game, the witch-themed “Witchbrook” — sometimes referred to by fans as “Spellbound” — to pour his energy into Haunted Chocolatier instead. In other words, the game we’re waiting on is itself a detour he chose deliberately.
So where does the game actually stand? Barone has said combat is now in place and that the story is mostly figured out, though plenty of mechanics and content still need to be built. It’s enough progress to be reassuring, but not enough to pin a release date to — and no date has been announced.
For now, the honest summary is this: development is active and accelerating, the core of the game exists, and the details are still being filled in. When Haunted Chocolatier is closer to being finished, Barone will presumably say so.
