Director Kitao Sakurai has confirmed he’s already writing a sequel to the upcoming Street Fighter movie — but whether it gets made depends entirely on how the first film performs when it opens on October 16, 2026. Here’s what’s known so far about the potential sequel, and the classic character fans are hoping to see.
Director Kitao Sakurai is already hard at work writing a sequel to his upcoming Street Fighter film, but whether it gets made depends on how the first movie performs.
Sakurai discussed the possibility of a sequel in an interview with MovieWeb, saying groundwork is already being laid to continue Ryu and Ken’s adventures after the events of the second World Warrior Tournament. But fans who want to see those fights continue will have to show up at their local theaters to make it happen.
“It’s something that we’re thinking about and developing,” Sakurai said. “I don’t want to say anything that locks us in. It also kind of depends on how people react to this one, and whether they, you know, support this vision of the story. We definitely have a lot of ideas, and we’re writing currently, but you know, I wouldn’t want to make any promises one way or the other about what exactly we’re gonna do.”
The cast share those hopes for a sequel, though they likewise stress that interest from moviegoers is essential to justify another Street Fighter film.
The film was also recently confirmed to include several animated sequences diving into Ryu and Ken’s backstory with their mentor, Gouken, and his brother, Akuma. Early reactions to what’s been shown so far have been positive, praising the art style and fluid animation — but there’s one character left out of the marketing thus far, and it’s already got the community’s gears turning about who a sequel might focus on.
Sagat has not appeared in any of the film’s trailers or advertisements, and no casting announcements have been made for him. Fans are hopeful that, if a sequel does get made, Sagat will be a significant part of it — but given the wealth of characters in the Street Fighter games, there’s no telling who might show up in a second movie.
Street Fighter is the second major Capcom property to reach theaters after the Resident Evil adaptation from director Zach Cregger, which was broadly well-received by moviegoers and critics alike — though hopes for its own sequel are low for now, given that Cregger has publicly said he will “never” touch a franchise film again.
Street Fighter releases in theaters on October 16, 2026. Ahead of release, star David Dastmalchian has discussed how he studied real-life cult leaders to bring M. Bison to the big screen.
